BCIF :: Philanthropy Program :: Individual Philanthropy

Individual Philanthropy

After many years of working in the field of corporate philanthropy, towards the end of 2009 BCIF started to research the field of individual philanthropy.  In cooperation with IPSOS Strategic marketing agency, in December, 2009 we conducted a research on citizens’ opinions regarding giving for the general welfare.  BCIF has in that manner gained insights on the culture of giving in Serbia, on the opinions of the citizens, on knowing the mechanisms for giving and their personal willingness to invest their financial means or material goods.  The basic results have shown that the citizens are ready to invest in the general welfare, but they lack the built-up trust in the organizations which concern humanitarian activities.  The citizens have clearly stated that they wish to invest the money, and that they are motivated to give out considerable sums of money when there is a clear need for that.

This research was used for development of the platform “Penny is not petty – giving hand, joyous heart”, conducted during 2010 and 2011. The aim of the campaign was to raise the awareness and solidarity of citizens about the importance of philanthropy, especially individual donations for common good and those that are in need. Funds raised during campaign have been donated to the children from families with multiple problems, gathered by the Children’s club “Moonlight” in Subotica. During campaign, citizens had the opportunity  to contribute by putting change in boxes hosted by various objects of the friends of the action, but also by sending SMS message or by payment to the allocated account. Besides its humanitarian goal, this action “Change counts – little help full heart” also had its educational side – public lessons in high school where students discussed the history of philanthropy in our country but in the world as well, and they have identified the ways to be involved in similar activities in their surroundings.

In the field of individual philanthropy, BCIF through its programs provides support to civil society organizations, with a goal to increase the understanding and experience of the organizations in working with individual donors.  For more details take a look at Support to civil society organizations.
