Great Ecological Action "June, 5th – My Day"
Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF), Green List of Serbia, Young Researchers of Serbi a and The Scout Organization of Serbia realized a great ecological action „June, 5th – My Day“in Belgrade, regarding World Environment Day. Participants made a big recycle sign on Square of the Republic, by which they sent a symbolic message to the citizens in charge, and to other people in the community to take on a more active role in solving of garbage disposal problem in Serbia.
The event was opened on Square of the Republic by Nada Dumić, representative of City of Belgrade and member of City Council. Mike Harvey, chief of mission of American Agency for International Development (USAID), Ivana Vranjican, Ecology Project Manager for Telenor Company, Kevin Wallis, special guest from Great Britain and member of The Scout Association of UK, as well as representatives of The Scout Organization of Serbia and Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF) spoke at the event.
After opening ceremony, participants walked along Knez Mihailova Street to Kalemegdan fortress, where the program commenced next to Serbian – French Amity Memorial. Žarko Paspalj, vice-president of Olympic Committee of Serbia joined the participants at Telenor stand. Famous basketball player threw the first can into the recycle bin, and by that marked the beginning of activities at six more places: Waste selection, Biodiversity, Natural habitats, Play, Song, Juggler’s stand.
After the first one, many „basketball points“ followed, which were made by children together with Žarko, and in that way showed the importance of recycling. During the entire day in all locations, more than 1000 children from entire Serbia in various workshops were dealing with ways for environment protection in creative and interactive ways. They were helped by ArtEko robot containers which have the ability to „talk“, and by jugglers with ecological performances.
- Waste management is a big problem in Serbia, more than 40% of Serbia does not have communal infrastructure, Serbian citizens throw 5000 tons of waste on daily basis, and more than half of that waste is being put on illegal landfills which are placed next to rivers, city squares and parks for children. Current estimations show that Serbia throws away about 50 million euros on illegal landfills per year, as secondary waste which may be recycled. That is the reason why, with this action and other actions from Oplaneti se! Recycle! Campaign, we want to influence institutions in charge, citizens and other factors in the community to take on a more active role in solving of waste disposal problem in Serbia, through creating conditions for waste selection as a necessary condition for launching the recycle process. - , said Miodrag Shrestha, Executive Director of Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF).
The employees from various companies participated in the action: Telenor, Coca Cola, Ernst and Young, Božić and sons etc. The action was organized in the scope of Oplaneti se! Do recycle campaign, which is being realized by the network of ecological organizations „Green List of Serbia“and Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF), in cooperation with Telenor foundation and Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC), with financial aid from USAID.
