Innovative Social Services for the Disabled- the first MS House in Novi Kneževac Is Now Open

Society of People who suffer from Multiple-sclerosis of Northern Banat region has celebrated 18 years of its existence by opening the first MS house, dedicated to people who suffer from multiple-sclerosis. In the scope of Social transition program, with support from Balkan Community Initiatives Fund and financial aid from Cooperating Netherlands Foundation for Central and Eastern Europe, Society of People who suffer from Multiple-sclerosis of Northern Banat region has managed to open the first house of its type in the region of South – Eastern Europe. The capacity of the house is currently available for 12 members who may satisfy their needs unobtrusively without difficulties (architectural barriers and unfit spaces for people with disabilities), which is at the same time the principal idea of an MS house. Apart from old members, the society is open for new members, primarily from six municipalities in which the organization operates, and those are: Ada, Senta, Čoka, Novi Kneževac, Kanjiža and Kikinda. The specialized team includes a neurologist, a physiotherapist, a working therapist, a psychologist and a social worker. The president of the society Slavica Đorić said that by opening of the MS house on the 18th anniversary of the society gives encouragement for the development of new services based in the local community for the disabled, but also transferring of experience onto others who have the goal to launch similar projects for their members.

Celebration of the society’s 18th anniversary was followed by an art colony of humanitarian and international character, which gathered participants from Macedonia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia, which took place from June, 23rd to June, 29th, 2010. This is the 8th art colony in a row entitled „Life is Art“. It is important to note that The Society of People who suffer from Multiple- Sclerosis has an important support from their local self – government. Festive opening of the sales exhibition by the president of the municipality only speaks in favor of that.

Inter - sector cooperation is the pillar of development of local communities, but regional cooperation is also very important. Because of that the president of the society has signed a memorandum on cooperation with Hungarian Organization of People who suffer from Multiple-sclerosis from the town of Székesfehérvár . Doctor Guseo András and Slavica Đorić have by their signatures agreed that the idea of developing mutual projects is of mutual importance and significance for the improvement of the quality of life of the disabled.
