„Penny is not petty! Giving hand, joyous heart“
Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF) foundation, with support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and in partnership with Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) is launching a campaign „Penny is not petty! Giving hand, joyous heart“, with the goal to awaken citizens’ consciousness and solidarity on the importance of philanthropy, that is individual giving for the general welfare to those who are in need of help. The means raised through the campaign are designed for children from dysfunctional families which are gathered around Children’s club „Moonlight“ from Subotica.
Campaign was preceded by a public opinion research on the importance of individual philanthropy that was conducted by IPSOS Strategic marketing in December, 2009 on the territory of Serbia, on the sample of 1091 examinees. A great majority of citizens (as much as 69%) said that the custom of giving for the general welfare is underdeveloped in Serbia, and even more people said that giving for the general welfare is not being encouraged enough (81%). As the main reasons for insufficient giving for the general welfare, the citizens stated poor financial situation (65% of citizens), the distrust that the means will be given to those who are meant to receive it (13%), but also the lack of consciousness for the needs of others. However, 86% of citizens said that they would participate in actions for giving for the general welfare in the future. More information on this research may be found at http://www.bcif.org/en/Individual_Philanthropy.htm.
„With his/her modest contribution, every individual may help a lot to those who are in need of help“, Ksenija Graovac, Philanthropy Program Manager at Balkan Community Initiatives Fund pointed out. Ms. Graovac thinks that this campaign will result in citizens’ better understanding of the principles of philanthropy, and stresses out that a public class will be held in several schools in Serbia, with the goal of young people getting acquainted with the importance of individual philanthropy, as well as a street happening that will bring citizens’ focus on this initiative. The citizens will be notified through billboards, videos, jingles etc.
Everyone who wishes may participate in this campaign by sending an SMS message to 2243, by online donations that will be launched at www.sitnisnijesitnica.rs, as well as by making payments on account number 340 – 11002728 – 70 Erste banka a.d. Novi Sad.
