“Penny is not petty! “ Street Action Held

On October, 16th, a street action was held in Belgrade at Nikole Pašica Square, regarding „Penny is not petty! Giving hand, joyous heart“ campaign, which is being implemented by domestic foundation Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF), which has a goal to raise awareness on the importance of individual giving.

In this action, intended for children from dysfunctional families which are gathered around Children’s Club „Moonlight“ from Subotica, the citizens had an opportunity to show solidarity by putting their contributions in the form of small change in 2 charity boxes, as well as to fill out a questionnaire on individual giving.  They could get more information on the campaign itself at 2 info points.  All those who participated in the action received a gift as well.

During the action 10.437,00 dinars were raised.  According to the results of the questionnaire, during the last year 72 out of 101 citizens in total participated in the actions of individual giving and that: by money support to vulnerable and neglected children (83%), by giving clothes to the vulnerable people (22%), and 15% in other ways.  The citizens stated distrust (41%), lack of means (10%) and insufficient information (48%) as principal reasons for not participating in individual giving during the past year.

Ksenija Graovac, Philanthropy Program Manager at Balkan Community Initiatives Fund, stated that this street action is only the beginning of the all-encompassing campaign which will be expanded to other cities in Serbia, with a goal to promote individual philanthropy as a concept among all the citizens, and to show that even a small contribution may mean a lot to those who are in need of that.

This action is implemented with financial support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and in partnership with Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC).
