Together Towards Sustainable Development

Government Vice President’s Cabinet for European Integrations organized a two day seminar for media’s chief editors.  The meeting was held on October 29th-30th in Banja Koviljaca under the slogan “Together towards Sustainable Development”.  The meeting was held in cooperation with Balkan Community Initiatives Fund and Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia, and with financial help from Rockefeller Brothers Fund and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.

The meeting had a goal to get media editors acquainted with the concept of sustainable development, since they are important partners in implementation of that concept in Serbia.  Through mutual exchange of opinions the meeting should have encouraged media’s interest in the concept of sustainable development, and motivated them to cover the topics which are important for sustainable development of the country in the more systematic manner.

During the first day of the seminar lectures were held with a goal to introduce the concept of sustainable development in itself, as well as the current condition and tendencies in Serbia and the rest of the world.  The introductory lecture was given by Government Vice President for European Integrations Božidar Đelić, who presented the results accomplished so far, and stressed out the importance of Serbia’s further investments towards reaching sustainable development.  Dutch expert Ronald Baks represented the international experiences and tendencies on the global level, as well as the experiences from the Netherlands, with reference to the importance of raising awareness of the citizens and unavoidable role the media have in that task.

On a round table, which was held during the second day of the seminar, the condition in media scene of Serbia in the field of sustainable development was discussed.  The introductory lecture was given by Vojislav Stevanović, Deputy Chief’s Editor of Economist magazine.  In an outstanding analysis of two specific topics and one case study, he has given a review of the current condition, stressing out both positive and negative examples.  In a lively discussion the journalists concluded that the media are an important factor in reaching the appointed goals in sustainable development, at one side as the control mechanism in the making and consistent implementation of decisions on all levels, and at the other side as the most influential factor in raising public awareness by expert, objective and correct informing.

Nadežda Gaće was the meeting’s moderator.  She pointed out the responsibility of the media, and invited all journalists to express their patriotism through professional work, by promoting the principles of sustainable development.

Government Vice President’s Cabinet for European Integration, as an institution in charge for coordination of implementation of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development, is planning to continue the cooperation with the media through a campaign on the local level.
