Salary Reimbursement Up to the Full Amount

After Belgrade, Užice is the second Serbian city where the employed women will receive the remainder of their salaries up to the full amount during their maternity leave.

Upon the proposal made by Civil Society “Initiative”, The City Council has adopted that suggestion, while the final decision should be made by The City Assembly.  The employed expectant motherswho are residents of the city will have the right to that type of reimbursement, regardless of the headquarters of the company they work in.

The action of signature collecting was launched on May, 24th 2011 by Civil Society “Initiative”, within “Active Young Women” project, which has been supported by Balkan Community Initiatives Fund.  During two days the proposal has been supported by the signatures of more than 1000 residents of Užice, as well as by the signatures of the majority of political parties’ representatives in the city.

- There were 310 employed expectant mothers last year.  6.5 million dinars were needed for their reimbursements, which was not a big impact on the budget.  In 2009 there were 316 employed expectant mothers – said Milena Vićević, President of CSO “Initiative” for Danas, while thanking the city authorities for adopting their proposal.

- The reimbursement of the 35% up to the full salary amount to the employed expectant mothers will be conducted in the following manner: The City Authorities will receive the data from Republic Institute for Health Insurance, based on which that Institute has already paid the 65% of the full salary amount - explained our interviewee.

Is there discrimination?

Upon the question whether the unemployed expectant mothers are being discriminated by this decision, she explained that the members of “Initiative” consulted the human rights experts, and that no discrimination was found.

- We have spoken with the city authorities about that problem as well, and we are currently looking for ways and opportunities to support the unemployed expectant mothers as well – said Milena Vićević.

Gordana Urošević from The City Assembly said that it is very difficult to estimate the number of unemployed expectant mothers in the city.

- That is still in the process of analyzing by which the number of unemployed expectant mothers should be determined.  Perhaps then we could define whether they will receive monthly reimbursements or a lump sum – explained Ms. Urošević for Danas.
