Training for Civil Society Organizations Held – Employing People with Disabilities

From August 19th to 21st 2011, in Šumadija hotel in Belgrade, Balkan Community Initiatives Fund, in cooperation with Soft Tulip Foundation from The Netherlands, organized a three-day training on employing people with disabilities.  The training is a part of the project entitled Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Serbia through Employment, which is being supported by Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia, within Support to Civil Society project.  We are implementing the project with the idea to enable active participation of civil society organizations in the creation of favorable surrounding for employing persons with intellectual disabilities in Serbia, based on experiences from The Netherlands.  The goals of the project are empowering CSOs to create a model of good praxis in employing persons with intellectual disabilities in local communities in Serbia, and to support the organizations to influence appropriate local and national policies in Serbia based on experiences from the EU countries (The Netherlands).

The training was held for the representatives of ten civil society organizations from Serbia which work on the improvement of the quality of life of persons with intellectual disabilities.  Out of those organizations, the following five organizations are partners on Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Serbia through Employment project, which will implement local actions in order to employ persons with intellectual disabilities:

  • Association for Help to Persons with Mental Disabilities “Blue Bird”, Kula
  • Association for Help to Persons with Mental Disabilities, Trstenik
  • Association for Sustainable Development “Bridges”, Kruševac
  • Serbian Association for Promoting Inclusion, Belgrade
  • Association for Support to Persons with Development Disorders “Our House”, Belgrade

Apart from those five organizations, the representatives of the following organizations also participated at the training:

  • Society for Cerebral and Child Paralysis, Trstenik
  • Youth with Disabilities Forum, Trstenik
  • Society for Help to Mentally Disabled Persons “Pearl”, Srbobran
  • Association for help and improvement of status of children and youth with disabilities OSMEH NA DLANU, Kruševac
  • Kec MNRO, Beograd
  • Mental Disability Rights Initiative of Serbia, Belgrade

The role of those organizations is to monitor the implementation of local actions and to participate in other project activities (trainings, national conference etc.)

The training was led by Dutch experts Erik Bloemkolk, Director of Soft Tulip Foundation, which is the partner organization on this project, and Hans van der Vilen, Director of Kordan Academy, the expert in social care.  They presented the examples of good praxis in employing persons with intellectual disabilities in The Netherlands, and gave concrete advice and instructions for the development of local actions for employing persons with intellectual disabilities in Serbia.

The general impression of all participants of the training was that it helped them to stop for a moment and make a critical review of their work in this field, and to get acquainted with different examples of good praxis in employing persons with intellectual disabilities in The Netherlands.  They got new ideas for their local actions, and Dutch experts helped them wholeheartedly in detailed planning of those actions by their rich experience.  For example, “Our House” from Belgrade will form so called Kitchen on Wheels, where their beneficiaries will bring food to old and tired people.  “Blue Bird” from Kula will open up a shop where their beneficiaries will sell souvenirs which they make atthe day-care center.
