Project "Mediocracy" by CSO Vido from Kragujevac

We present you two events which took place within “Mediocracy” project by CSO Vido from Kragujevac.  The first part of a series of lectures and music programs “Mediocracy” took place between September 3rd and 15th 2011 at the premises of Youth Cultural Center “Dom omladine” in Kragujevac, and “Soda” club with two weeks’ intervals between each event.

Mediocracy-informativeself-service shop and fun machinery- Mediocracy is a project which for its goal has the task to raise awareness on the continuity of media forms development during the 90’s and later, the way in which the media influence the perception of reality which was often different than the one we were going through, with unveiling of the mechanisms according to which they function, including complicated reflection of social, political, artistic and cultural relations.  It had to be presented in a different way and to offer a different Serbia through music program and presentations/workshops.

On Saturday, September 3rd at 7 PM “Informative self-service shop” took place in front of a full auditorium.  The participants and guests talked about the local media scene, in comparison with the self-service shop in which the national media always had a full shopping basket by taking what it was suitable for them.

Vlada Paunović
(NGO Millenium) and Branko Vučković (Chief Editor of Radio Kragujevac, journalist at Radio Free Europe) discussed on the topic of whether the 90’shave returned, in terms of the media.  After interactive exchange of information, the bends Downtrodden and Dishumanity performed, starting at 10 PM at the Garden of Dom omladine.

On Saturday, September 15th “Fun Machinery” took place.  There people talked about the mechanisms of national joy which had thenbeen conditioned, just like today, by economic interests and which had been filtered through the public administration’s filter.  Only those who succumbed to the system had the media space and shows which were watched by millions of people.  The accent was put on the music scene of that time, status symbols, the creation of new music genres and the cause and effect principle which functioned on the relation music scene – criminal – country – media.  The topic was inspiring, so it provoked a great participation and response from the audience.  What spiced up both interactive lectures were video collages which will as a form continue to online-virally point out to Mediocracy’s topic and activities.

Guest lecturers were Ivica Đorđević, representative of the team of Media Archeology from Belgrade and Saša Jakovljević Trapez, while the moderators were Ana Milanović and Milan Tešić, members of Mediocracy.  Interactive exchange of information was followed at 10 PM by a funny and knowing performance by the famous punk hardcore band “KBO!” from Kragujevac at the Garden of Dom omladine.

The next event took place on October 1st.  The topic was the elections – “Voting Machine” – which was a call for the young people to give their vote to one or two (or more) realities on which they have to decide for themselves.

"Mediocracy" project is being realized by “CSO Vido” and informal group “Mediocracy” with support from Centrifuga 2011 program, which is beingimplemented by ERSTE Bank and Balkan Community Initiatives Fund.
