12 Tons of Paper Collected at the Inception of Oplaneti se! Do Recycle Campaign

Over 12 tons of used paper has been collected during the first action within Oplaneti se! Do recycle ecological campaign, which was realized on Saturday, November 26th in Raška.  In cooperation with Public Communal Enterprise “Raška” the paper was transported to the recycling plant.

Over 2000 citizens of Raška participated in the action of waste collecting, which was organized by Eco Club “Green Road signs” from Raška, the member of Green List of Serbia.  The realization of the action was enabled by Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF), in cooperation with Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) and Young Researchers of Serbia, with financial support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID).  During the previous seven days, the citizens had an opportunity to take their waste to several locations in the city.  The contest in collecting used paper was organized for elementary school students.

More than 450 students of “Raška” and “Sutjeska” elementary schools participated in the contest.  The winners received complementary excursions.  The absolute champions in waste collecting were the students of VII-2 of “Raška” elementary school, who managed to collect 1200kg of used paper.  Predrag Milosavljević, the student of VII-2, pointed out the team work as the crucial factor which enabled his class to become the champion in waste collecting.

During the action in Raška, Draško Radosavljević, Director of Public Communal Enterprise “Raška”, pointed out that it is futile to construct recycling centers without primary waste selection.

Jelena Leskovac, the representative of Institute for Sustainable Communities, said that Oplaneti se!campaign has achieved very good results over the past two years.  It has been decided to upgrade the campaign this year,so that it becomes a part of the big network of organizations within Green Initiative.

Apart from the contest in waste collecting, the students had an opportunity to participate in eco games and recycling quizzes.  Informal group “Graffiti 036” drew recycling graffiti in front of “Raška” elementary school.

By realizing activities directed at waste collection, Green List of Serbia and Green Initiative within Oplaneti se!  Do recycle campaign wish to increase the participation of the citizens, recycling businesses and local institutions in the field of collecting recycling materials.  During the realization of the actions in 12 cities in Serbia over 30000kg of plastic, paper, electronic and electric waste will be collected, which will then be taken to recycling plants.  Oplaneti se!  Do recycle campaign is being realized as a part of eco activities of Green Initiative, aimed at the improvement of primary selection on the local and national level, and the reform of the praxis in waste management in Serbia.

The following action within Oplaneti se!  Do recycle campaign will be realized in Vranje on Saturday, December 3rd 2011.
